The colourful geological map displays the distribution of different types of rock and soil, and shows the structure of the chalk Wolds and the alluvial Marsh.

The 1916 sketch map was drawn by C S Carter who was curator of Louth Museum, and summarises some of his knowledge about the history of the town.  It shows old road names such as Padehole (Northgate), Walkergate (Queen Street), Kit Kat Lane (Kidgate) and Leckeburngate (Legbourne Road).

Also on display are a linear map of the road from Lincoln to Saltfleet published in the Gentleman’s Magazine of 1782, and (on loan from Louth Town Council) a copy of the 1797 map of Louth Town drawn by Thomas Espin.

These are just a few of the many and various maps on display in the museum’s Map Exhibtion.  Others are very early maps of Lincolnshire and the town of Louth, tithe maps, Ordnance Survey maps, plans showing drainage and siting of telegraph poles, and plans of slum clearance schemes and properties that were sold.

So if you are a cartophile (someone who greatly admires and enjoys maps) or just a generally curious person, do come and see our Map Exhibition which runs from 6 April to 4 June 2022.
