In the museum collection, we have a receipt for a monetary donation made by shopkeeper Mr Pridmore to ‘Louth Soup Kitchen’.  The soup kitchen was an initiative organised in the early 1920s by Louth Ex-Servicemen’s Club and the British Legion.  In November 1923, the Louth Standard Newspaper stated, ‘last year some 600 or 700 meals were served every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday’.

One of the prime organisers of this charity was alderman and timber merchant Albert Ernest Maxey.  He was a prominent citizen with a strong sense of public duty, and he was six times mayor of Louth.

A hundred years later, in 2023, economic circumstances are still very tough for many people in Louth, and we have organisations such as the Lighthouse Project and Neighbour’s Kitchen helping to provide food, essentials, and support for those in need.
